Last update June 25, 2022

Clotiapine; Clothiapine

Limited compatibility

Unsafe. Moderate/severe adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Use safer alternative or discontinue breastfeeding from 5 to 7 T ½ . Read Commentary.

Atypical or second-generation antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Oral administration in two to three daily doses.

Since the last update, we have not found any published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

The little pharmacokinetic data that is known makes it difficult to predict its excretion in breastmilk.

It has very few and/or very old bibliographic references and is sold in very few countries for reasons of efficacy and efficiency compared to other antipsychotics. (Carpenter 2004)

Until there is further published data on this drug in relation to breastfeeding, known safer alternatives are preferable, especially during the neonatal period and in cases of prematurity.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
