Last update June 26, 2022

C21H32Cl2N4O,HCl

Limited compatibility

Unsafe. Moderate/severe adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Use safer alternative or discontinue breastfeeding from 5 to 7 T ½ . Read Commentary.

Atypical or second-generation antipsychotic indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Oral administration once daily.

Since the last update, we have not found any published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Its high percentage of protein binding make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk.

Cariprazine and its two active metabolites have a very long half-life (2 days, 3 weeks), which could favor the passage into breast milk.

Cariprazine produces minimal effects on prolactin levels. (Culpepper 2022)

Until there is further published data on this drug in relation to breastfeeding, known safer alternatives are preferable (Wichniak 2021), especially during the neonatal period and in cases of prematurity.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
