Last update July 27, 2022

Ritodrine Hydrochloride

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

It is a β2-adrenergic agonist used to inhibit uterine contractions of premature labor. Administration by intravenous infusion or repeated intramuscular injections for a maximum of 2 days.

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Its very large volume of distribution can make it difficult to pass into breast milk.

Its very low oral bioavailability minimizes the passage into plasma of the infant from ingested breast milk.

Although temporary cessation of breastfeeding should be considered when a woman is experiencing premature labor, breastfeeding during pregnancy does not increase the risk of premature labor and birth. (Ayrim 2014)

Monitor possible appearance of tachycardia, hypotension, fever, irritability or tremors in the infant. Until published data on this drug in relation to lactation are known, known safer alternatives are preferable.

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
