The leaf is used. It contains phenolic acids, including cynarin, flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones, organic acids, potassium and magnesium salts, mucilages, essential oil, phytosterols (sitosterol and stigmasterol), triterpene alcohols and vitamins (A, B2 and C).
