N06AX??

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

Zuranolone is a neuroactive steroid drug, GABA-A receptor modulator, used in the treatment of postpartum depression. Oral administration in a daily dose for 14 days. (FDA 2023).

It is excreted in breast milk in clinically insignificant amount. (Deligiannidis 2024, FDA 2023)

Its pharmacokinetic data (large volume of distribution, moderately high molecular weight and high percentage of binding to plasma proteins) make it unlikely to pass into breast milk in clinically significant quantities.

Expert authors consider that it can be used during breastfeeding. (Hale, LactMed)

May produce excessive sedation and confusion during administration (FDA 2023), so the mother should be monitored and accompanied.

Due to possible sedation of the mother, bed sharing with the baby (co-sleeping) is not recommended if this medication is being taken. (ABM 2020 and 2008, UNICEF 2018, 2017, 2017, 2014 and 2013, Landa 2012, UNICEF 2006)

Alternatives

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
