Antimicrobial polypeptide produced by strains of Bacillus licheniformis or Bacillus subtilis. Used alone or in association with neomycin to prevent wound infections and treat skin and eye infections. Topical use; very nephrotoxic in systemic administration, it has been used intramuscularly (im) to treat staphylococcal pneumonias and empyemas.
It is not absorbed through skin or mucous membranes or intestinal tract (Martindale, DrugBank, Schaefer 2015, Longacre 1951). Having a protein structure, buccopharyngeal preparations are destroyed in the gastrointestinal tract not passing into blood.
Do not apply on the breast or clean well before breastfeeding.
It is advisable to avoid the application on the nipple of creams, gels and other products of local application containing kerosene (mineral oil) so that the infant does not absorb it. (Concin 2008, Noti 2003)
It is considered a drug of low therapeutic usefulness by the French health safety agency. (WHO 2005) (WHO 2005).
