Bacitracin; Bacitracin Zinc

Compatible

Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.

Antimicrobial polypeptide produced by strains of Bacillus licheniformis or Bacillus subtilis. Used alone or in association with neomycin to prevent wound infections and treat skin and eye infections. Topical use; very nephrotoxic in systemic administration, it has been used intramuscularly (im) to treat staphylococcal pneumonias and empyemas.

It is not absorbed through skin or mucous membranes or intestinal tract (Martindale, DrugBank, Schaefer 2015, Longacre 1951). Having a protein structure, buccopharyngeal preparations are destroyed in the gastrointestinal tract not passing into blood.

Do not apply on the breast or clean well before breastfeeding.

It is advisable to avoid the application on the nipple of creams, gels and other products of local application containing kerosene (mineral oil) so that the infant does not absorb it. (Concin 2008, Noti 2003)

It is considered a drug of low therapeutic usefulness by the French health safety agency. (WHO 2005) (WHO 2005).

Several medical societies and expert authors consider the use of this medication safe during breastfeeding. (LactMed, Hale, Briggs 2015, Schaefer 2015, Leachman 2006)

List of essential medicines WHO 2002: compatible with breastfeeding. (WHO 2002)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.

Your contribution is essential for this service to continue to exist. We need the generosity of people like you who believe in the benefits of breastfeeding.
