Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
Your contribution is essential for this service to continue to exist. We need the generosity of people like you who believe in the benefits of breastfeeding.
Thank you for helping to protect and promote breastfeeding.

Alverine is a direct relaxant of intestinal and uterine smooth muscle. It acts by inhibiting calcium channels and has no antimuscarinic or anticholinergic activity (Brenner 2021). It is used in the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and in the treatment of dysmenorrhoea. Administered orally or in suppositories one to three times a day.
At the time of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Product with very few bibliographic references and marketed in only a few countries. The scarcity of known pharmacokinetic data does not allow for predicting possible excretion in breast milk.
Side effects are rare and mild, often no greater than those experienced with placebo. (Brenner 2021)
Until more published data on this drug in relation to breastfeeding is available, safer known alternatives may be preferable, especially during the neonatal period and in cases of prematurity.
