Vincamine

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

This is one of the alkaloids from the Vinca minor plant with vasodilatory properties. Indicated without sufficient evidence to increase cerebral circulation.
Administered orally 3 times a day.

It can trigger serious cardiac arrhythmias (Fauchier 1993, Dany 1981).

It has very few bibliographical references. It is classified as having low therapeutic efficacy (Canary Islands Health Service 2011, INSALUD 2001).

Since the last update date we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Until there is more published data about this drug in relation to breastfeeding, safer alternatives may be preferred, especially during the neonatal period and in the case of prematurity.

It is a non-essential medication and even more so during breastfeeding. If you have to use it, you can minimize the risk by waiting to breastfeed, if possible, about 4 hours after the medication is taken.

Alternatives

  • Pentoxifylline (Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.

Your contribution is essential for this service to continue to exist. We need the generosity of people like you who believe in the benefits of breastfeeding.

Thank you for helping to protect and promote breastfeeding.
