Torsemide. Torasemide

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

Torsemide or Torasemide is a loop or high ceiling diuretic with actions similar to those of furosemide. used to treat hypertension and edema associated with heart failure, kidney failure, or liver disease. It causes intense diuresis. Oral administration once daily.

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Its pharmacokinetic data (very high percentage of protein binding and wide volume of distribution) make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk.

Excessive diuresis can reduce milk production. In the past, diuretics and fluid restriction have been used to suppress lactation after calving. (Kall 1977)
Administration of torasemide in the first week after delivery did not decrease the frequency of initial lactation. (Viteri 2018)

Prolonged use of diuretics can inhibit lactation. It is advisable to use the lowest possible dose, especially the first month.

Alternatives

  • Furosemide (Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.)
  • Hydrochlorothiazide (Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
