It is an acid composed of glucose and phenolic acids found in bark and roots of fruits and plants. It is a form of tannin, a polyphenol. Tannins are abundant in the bark of oak and chestnut trees. There are foods rich in tannic acid: red wine, coffee, tea, spinach, guava. It has astringent and antioxidant properties. It has been used as an astringent for the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, and in suppositories for the treatment of hemorrhoids. It is an ingredient in several dermatological preparations.
At the time of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Their high molecular weight makes their passage into milk in significant concentration unlikely.
When administered orally, it is converted to gallic acid and glucose in the intestine and is absorbed irregularly (AEMPS 202). It is a product devoid of toxicity, which is found in many foods, so it is not expected to cause problems during lactation.
Its consumption as part of a food and its topical use are compatible with lactation.
