Tacalcitol is a vitamin D analog with little effect on calcium metabolism. It has actions and uses similar to those of calcipotriol; indicated in the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. Topical application as a lotion or ointment at 0.0004%.
At the time of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
There is negligible systemic absorption (< 0.5%) of the drug after application of tacalcitol to the skin (AEMPS 2018, Peters 1997), which together with its high binding to plasma proteins makes it unlikely that significant levels can be reached in breast milk; it is not necessary to interrupt lactation during treatment. (Almirall 2020)
No alterations in calcemia or calciuria secondary to treatment have been observed. (Peters 1997)
Do not apply on the breast to avoid ingestion by the infant; if necessary, apply after a feeding and rinse well with water before the next feeding.
