Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
Your contribution is essential for this service to continue to exist. We need the generosity of people like you who believe in the benefits of breastfeeding.
Thank you for helping to protect and promote breastfeeding.

Spectinomycin is an aminocyclitol antibiotic used to treat susceptible strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. It is administered intramuscularly in a single dose.
At the date of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Its pharmacokinetic data (low molecular weight and low binding to plasma proteins) suggest that it could be easily excreted in breast milk.
Possible side effects are rare and not serious.
If it is desired to minimize the risk of side effects, one can wait 5 ½ T (10 to 15 hours) to breastfeed after administration of the drug.
The possible negativity of cultures in febrile infants whose mothers take antibiotics should be taken into account.
Pending further published data on this drug in relation to lactation, safer known alternatives may be preferable, especially during the neonatal period and in case of prematurity.
