The seed of the tree is used. The essential oil contains myristicin, safrole, eugenol and isoeugenol, among other products. Indication Commission E German Ministry of Health: none, as its claimed properties are not considered proven. (Blumenthal 1998)
At the date of the last update, we found no published data on its excretion in breast milk.
Some of its components, such as eugenol, are excreted in breast milk. (Debong 2024)
Cases of poisoning due to abuse of high doses for recreational purposes have been reported, resulting in anticholinergic symptoms with convulsions, narcosis and hallucinations. (Flam 2015, Roeters 2015, Sivathanu 2014, Ostabal 2014, Carstairs 2011, Pastrana 2008, Forrester 2005, Lavy 1987). The anticholinergic effect (Cuong 2014) could inhibit milk production.
Widely used as a spice. Given its lack of toxicity at correct doses, moderate consumption as a culinary condiment is acceptable during breastfeeding.
