Medrogestone

Likely Compatibility

Fairly safe. Mild or unlikely adverse effects. Compatible under certain circumstances. Follow-up recommended. Read Commentary.

It is a progestogen structurally related to progesterone that is used in the treatment of menstrual disorders (secondary amenorrhea, dysfunctional bleeding). oral administration. High doses are used in the treatment of endometrial carcinoma, prostatic hyperplasia, and breast disorders, including carcinoma. (Martindale, DrugBank)

Since the last update we have not found published data on its excretion in breastmilk.

Its very high percentage of protein binding make it highly unlikely that significant quantities will pass into breast milk.

Other progestogens are excreted in breast milk in clinically insignificant amounts and no problems have been observed in infants whose mothers were taking them; they are considered compatible with breastfeeding..

Until more published data is known about this drug in relation to breastfeeding, known safer alternatives are preferable, especially during the neonatal period and in the event of prematurity.

Alternatives

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
