It is a diuretic used to treat hypertension or edema caused by heart failure, kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, estrogen therapy, and other conditions. Oral administration.
It is excreted in breast milk in an amount that could be significant. (Mulley 1978)
In the past it was used to inhibit lactation. (Emran 1966)
Long-term treatment with diuretic drugs (particularly those Thiazides with long lasting effect and loop-acting drugs) may inhibit lactation. Use a lower dose as possible, especially during the first postnatal month.
Its long half-life and the amount that is excreted in milk make the use of an alternative advisable.
