It is a chlorine compound in the form of a gas that is very soluble in water. With properties very similar to bleach but more toxic.
It has a great oxidizing capacity that destroys on contact viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, and this makes it a useful disinfectant for medical spaces and materials and for drinking water (Tofanelli 2020, Wang 2020).
It is used in the paper industry as a wood pulp bleach and in the food industry for the treatment of flour.
It is highly corrosive and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. It should not be used as a skin disinfectant and even less for inhalation or ingestion. It has been used, though very diluted, in mouthwashes for oral hygiene, but it has not shown to be of superior efficacy to other mouthwashes that are devoid of toxicity (Kerémi 2020).
We did not find published data regarding the excretion of this substance through breast milk at the time this last update was completed.
The so-called "miracle mineral solution (MMS)" is an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite (NaClO2) that, in contact with the acids of fruit juices and/or gastric juice, releases chlorine dioxide. It is promoted in a false and fraudulent way as a cure for many diseases: diabetes, cancer, acne, autism and all kinds of infections including flu, HIV-AIDS, Covid-19 and other viral diseases (Kály 2020, NewsCAP 2019).
The FDA has discouraged its use due to lack of evidence of its efficacy and high risk of serious health complications (PAHO 2020, FDA 2020 and 2019, Loh 2014, White 2010, Babu 2008, Taub 2002, Winder 2001, Moulick 1992).
A product whose consumption does not produce any benefit and can make people seriously ill and endanger their lives should not be used, and even less while breastfeeding.
