Ciprofloxacin, Ophthalmic use

Compatible

Safe product and/or breastfeeding is the best option.

Fluoroquinolone with bactericidal effect by inhibition of bacterial DNA synthesis. It is used as eye drops to treat corneal ulcers and superficial eye infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria.

As with most topical ophthalmic preparations, the minimal dose and low blood absorption make it compatible with breastfeeding.

In addition, Ciprofloxacin, when it is even administered systemically, it is excreted into breast milk in very small amount without reported problems in the infants whose mothers were treated. The plasma levels in these infants were found undetectable or very low (see info on Ciprofloxacin).

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that it is usually compatible with breastfeeding. (AAP 2001)

Suggestions made at e-lactancia are done by APILAM team of health professionals, and are based on updated scientific publications. It is not intended to replace the relationship you have with your doctor but to compound it. The pharmaceutical industry contraindicates breastfeeding, mistakenly and without scientific reasons, in most of the drug data sheets.
